Notes A view of the old St Leonard's Church at Shoreditch. The Church, built in the 12th century, was demolished in 1716 after the partial collapse of its bell tower. The current St Leonard's was built in 1736-40 in the Palladian style by George Dance the Elder, who took inspiration from Wren's steeple for St Mary-le-Bow. Although this engraving was completed in 1795, the view is taken after a plan of the building a century earlier.

The 'F. Cary' who engraved the plate is probably Francis Cary, the brother and sometimes collaborator of John Cary. John Cary (c.1754-1835) was a British engraver, cartographer, and publisher, best known for the New and Correct English Atlas, his series of British road-maps in Cary's New Itinerary, as well as pre-1805 Ordnance Surveys.
