A man who has lost control of his horse careers wildly towards a wall signposted 'whoever...Against this wall shall be prosecuted'.His hat and wig have flown off his head and fall to the ground behind him. The sky in this print has an ink wash. James Bretherton (fl. 1750-1799) was an etcher, dealer and publisher in London. His brother was Charles Bretherton. He is particularly associated with Henry William Bunbury, many of whose works he engraved and published. His stock of plates was auctioned in 1799. Ex. Col: Brigadier Noël Louis St Pierre Bunbury DSO (1890–1971) Condition: Glue staining to corners, loss to bottom left corner. Time toning and some surface marks. Trimmed within the plate an d tipped onto an album page. |
