John Wright's print of the grand stained glass window depicts the Crucifixion. Christs's death is portrayed with numerous subordinate figures. At the bottom left and right, Henry VII and his queen are shown kneeling. Above the king is St George, and above the queen is St Catherine of Alexandria, pictured with the instruments of her martyrdom. The image was originally published in 1768 by the Society of Antiquaries of London as part of a series entitled the Vetusta Monumenta. James Basire I (1730 - 1802) was an engraver and printmaker. Often confused with his son of the same name, James Basire I was the master of William Blake. Condition: A few small tears to the extremities of the sheet. |
