Inscription below title reads: 'From a picture in the Collection of the Honourable George Agar Ellis M. P. F. R. I. &c. &c. &c. to whom this plate is dedicated by his Obedient and very Humble Servant.' A group of monkeys drunk in a tavern, two fighting, one fallen onto his back, his competitor standing at left with fists clenched, disturbing a barrel at right, playing cards scattered all over the floor, a monkey in female dress entering the room behind, waving a broom in anger Charles Turner (1773 - 1857).Mezzotinter, acted as the publisher of much of his work. Diaries relating to the first six years of his professional career are in the British Library (Add. Mss. 37525). Whitman refers to diaries for the last seven years of Turner's life, saying that they were presented to the Museum by Miss Savery, Turner's grand-daughter, they were, in fact, never presented and, according to Christian Fox (personal communication, November 2010), these later diaries are at the Beinecke Library, Yale University.
