A large-scale woodcut illustration of the Oxford and Cambridge University boat race. The scene shows the two teams at the centre of the image with bustling crowds, press boats and racing crews surrounding them. Issued as a supplement to The Graphic of May 13, 1878, with no text on verso. The Graphic, founded by William Luson Thomas, was a weekly illustrated newspaper in London that ran from 1869 until 1932. Believing that the Illustrated London News was unsympathetic towards artists, Thomas published The Graphic to compete with the popular Illustrated London News. Sydney G. Hall (fl.1880s) was a prolific woodcut engraver, who worked predominantly for The Graphic. Condition: Pressed vertical folds as issued, some pressed diagonal creases, a repaired tear in image in right, and some staining in the margins. |
