A young man seated in profile to right at a table, on which lie two globes, holding papers in his left hand, writing with the right; a figure, wearing a turban, looking at him from behind a screen at right; large open book leaning against open wooden box in foreground, on which lie four scrolls. From a set of eight etchings in paper wrappers. John Sell Cotman (1782 – 1842) was an English marine and landscape painter, etcher, illustrator and author. One of the leading lights of the Norwich school of artists Cotman exhibited in the Royal Academy aged just 18. Popham 342 Condition: Printed on India laid paper. Small stain to left of image. |
