Plate 32 of Bourne's Drawings of the London & Birmingham Railway, London, Bourne et al., 1839 (Abbey Life 401). Showing a temporary railway ascending the hill to give access to the builders of the ventilation works. The one mile long Kilsby tunnel was the only one on the northern section of the line and was built because the Northamptonshire hills formed a barrier across almost all conceivable routes.
