Penn stands centre left with his arms open, his entourage beside him, two of his men kneeling, offering gifts to the Indians who are assembled at the right; buildings in construction behind at the left, boats on the sea at right. Henry Dawe (1790 - 1848) was a genre painter and mezzotint engraver; son of Philip, brother of George Dawe, he worked in London and in St. Petersburg, 1824-1827. Benjamin West (1738 - 1820) was a history painter. Born in Pennsylvania; he went to Rome in 1760 then on to London in 1763, where he remained, becoming President of the Royal Academy. Ex. Col.: Hon.
