Frontispiece to Alexander Pope's 'The Works of Shakespeare in Six Volumes', published between 1723 and 1725. Half-length portrait of William Shakespeare, after the Harleian miniature. Looking towards the viewer, and with his torso turned slightly to the right, Shakespeare wears a point ruff and a doublet embellished with darts. The portrait is set within an oval, which is surmounted by a wreath and a scroll inscribed with 'William Shakespeare'. Beneath sits a plinth with a crest. O'Donoghue 40 Condition: Trimmed to plate mark, and some overall time toning to sheet. |
