Engraver's proof, before all letters. David Lucas (1802 - 1881) was a British mezzotinter, known as 'Constable's engraver' for his successful reproductions after the artist. A pupil of S.W Reynolds between 1820 and 1827, Lucas made all the plates for Constable's English Landscape Scenery (1829-32). He died indigent in Fulham workhouse. Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem (1621/22 - 1683) was a Dutch painter and etcher. Born in Haarlem, he was the pupil of his father Pieter Claesz and of Jan van Goyen. In 1634 in Amsterdam, he studied under Claes Moeyaert; and between 1637 and 1639 was a pupil of Pieter de Grebber in Haarlem. In 1642 he became a member of the St Luke Guild; and from 1660 lived and worked in Amsterdam. It is possible that he lived in Rome between 1647 and 1652. Gooden & Fox 147, Lennox-Boyd i/i Ex.
