In the foreground a lamp lights the bridge, a lone figure walks in the middle distance sheltering from the rain under a parasol. In the background is a small row of houses, their windows lit. Shiro Kasamatsu (1898-1991) was a student of Kaburagi Kiyokata and worked in Shin Hanga and Sosaku Hanga style. He started creating woodblock prints for the publisher Watanabe in 1919 and by the late 1940s he had designed more than 50 prints for Watanabe publishing house. In the 1950s he published bird and animal prints, landscapes and "famous views" with the publisher Unsodo - all together more than 100 designs. |
